Introducing CM-FDI

Two decades of capital, mapped to where the clean economy is actually being built.

CM-FDI is an open, project-level database of cross-border investment in solar, wind, battery and electric-vehicle manufacturing. It is built by the Net Zero Industrial Policy Lab at Johns Hopkins University to track who is funding the global race for clean energy, and where the money is landing. Every project is sourced individually from company announcements, filings and trade press.

Four ways in

One dataset, four formats. Take whichever fits what you are trying to do.

The paper's regression tables sit in its methodological appendix, which also sets out how each project was sourced and verified. PDF · 576 KB.

What is in it

Greenfield and expansion projects where the investor is headquartered outside the destination economy. Each record carries its own sources, field by field.

Coverage

Announced 1996 to 2026, 66 destination economies, 30 home economies, 423 parent firms. The explorer charts from 2001 and places the two earlier projects there. 215 projects are joint ventures.

What the numbers are

Announced or reported capital in US$ millions. 259 of 1,042 projects are announced without a value and read as zero, which is a gap in disclosure rather than a project without capital behind it.

Basis

974 of 1,042 projects are manufacturing; the rest are R&D, design and logistics. The paper was written on an earlier release of this dataset, and works from 888 of 926 projects there: those announced 2000 to 2025, leaving out cancelled, paused and closed ones. On this release the same rule selects 963 of 1,042. The explorer counts all 1,042, and every figure states which basis it is on.
